Length converter
Meters to millimeters.
Convert a larger metric length into the fine units used on a cutting list or engineering drawing.
The marker shows the fractional part of one inch. This diagram illustrates tick positions; it is not a physical-size ruler.
Conversion formula
millimeters = meters × 1000
Enter the source length above. The result updates immediately. These calculations use exact length definitions: 1 m = 100 cm = 1000 mm, 1 in = 25.4 mm, and 1 ft = 12 in. Only the displayed answer and fractional ruler mark are rounded. The feet-and-inches output splits a length into whole feet and remaining inches; decimal feet do not encode an inch count.
Worked example
A shelf length of 1.2 m becomes 1200 mm. A clearance of 0.004 m becomes 4 mm. Converting these quantities before making a cutting list avoids mixing meters and millimeters in the same arithmetic. The conversion itself does not add a cutting allowance.
Conversion table: m → mm
Select a source value to load it into the calculator. Decimal results are displayed to at most six places; inch fractions in this table are rounded to 1/16 inch.
| Meters (m) | Millimeters (mm) | Nearest inch fraction |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | ≈ 1/16 in | |
| 4 | ≈ 3/16 in | |
| 10 | ≈ 3/8 in | |
| 100 | ≈ 3 15/16 in | |
| 250 | ≈ 9 13/16 in | |
| 500 | ≈ 19 11/16 in | |
| 1,000 | ≈ 39 3/8 in | |
| 1,200 | ≈ 47 1/4 in | |
| 2,000 | ≈ 78 3/4 in | |
| 5,000 | ≈ 196 7/8 in |
When to use this conversion
Use this when a supplier quotes a length in meters but a drawing, ruler, or workshop instruction uses millimeters. Enter the complete meter measurement, including decimal places. Add allowances for saw kerf, joints, or thermal expansion separately rather than hiding them inside a unit conversion.
Do not confuse millimeters with milliliters, which measure volume. A dimensional specification should keep its unit next to the number, especially when a large result such as 1200 could otherwise be mistaken for centimeters.
Exact conversion versus a ruler reading
The unit relationship is exact, but a measured object may have uncertainty. At 1/16 inch, the maximum rounding difference is half a tick: 1/32 inch, or 0.79375 mm. The calculator shows the actual rounding difference for your value. Use a finer division only if the source measurement and physical instrument support that precision.
Next steps
Numerical conversion needs no display calibration. Comparing a physical object against your screen does. Use the ruler for small objects, a verified paper ruler away from your display, or an appropriate calibrated instrument for safety-critical measurements.
