Accuracy and Measurement Methodology

By OG Online Ruler team · Updated: September 30, 2026

What the tool calculates

OG Online Ruler converts browser coordinates into physical-length estimates. The central calibration value is pixels per inch (PPI): the number of displayed pixels assigned to one physical inch. Inches can then be converted to centimeters using 2.54 centimeters per inch, and centimeters can be divided into ten millimeters.

The ruler does not infer the size of an object from a camera image. It draws a scale on the active display and lets the user compare a physical object with that scale. All measurement coordinates and saved calibration preferences are processed in the browser.

Conversion model

QuantityConversion used
Inches from displayed pixelspixels ÷ calibrated PPI
Centimeters from displayed pixels(pixels ÷ calibrated PPI) × 2.54
Millimeters from displayed pixels(pixels ÷ calibrated PPI) × 25.4
PPI from resolution and diagonal√(pixel width² + pixel height²) ÷ diagonal inches

These equations are simple; obtaining the correct effective PPI is the difficult part. Browser zoom, operating-system scale, screen mode, and device pixel ratio can all influence the coordinate system exposed to a web page. For that reason, calibration should be verified on the same monitor and at the same zoom used for measurement.

Calibration methods and confidence

Device profile

A profile combines known screen characteristics for a named model. It offers a fast estimate, but model variants and system scaling can introduce a mismatch. The interface therefore presents device detection as a calibration aid rather than a guarantee.

Screen diagonal

This method derives panel density from horizontal pixels, vertical pixels, and physical diagonal. It is mathematically useful when the display is running at native resolution and the diagonal is known. It does not by itself account for browser zoom or every operating-system scaling configuration.

Physical card comparison

The card method adjusts the scale until an on-screen outline matches the 85.60 × 53.98 mm ID-1 reference. It directly calibrates what the user sees, so it can account for system scaling that is difficult to infer. Its main error sources are card wear, visual alignment, parallax, and imprecise slider adjustment.

Verification procedure

We recommend a simple independent check whenever physical accuracy matters:

  1. Set the browser to 100% zoom and keep the window on one display.
  2. Calibrate with the chosen method.
  3. Select centimeters and compare a physical ruler over a 10 cm span.
  4. Select inches and compare over a 2 inch span.
  5. Repeat the alignment once to check that the reading is reproducible.
  6. If the error changes with direction, browser, or monitor, recalibrate and report the environment rather than assuming one universal correction.

A longer verification span makes proportional errors easier to see. For example, a 1 mm discrepancy over 10 cm is a 1% difference. The same endpoint discrepancy over 1 cm would be a 10% difference and could be dominated by visual alignment.

Known limitations

Scope and appropriate use

OG Online Ruler is intended for education, quick everyday checks, design comparisons, craft work, and other low-risk tasks. It is not certified measuring equipment and does not claim a fixed tolerance across all devices. Users should verify the scale before each important session and use a suitable physical instrument when the decision depends on a small tolerance.

Do not rely on the tool alone for medicine, construction, manufacturing acceptance, legal trade measurement, laboratory work, or safety systems. A convenient browser comparison cannot replace an instrument calibrated to a traceable standard.

Maintenance and corrections

The tool and guidance are maintained by the OG Online Ruler team. We review device-profile reports, browser compatibility, calibration behavior, accessibility, and measurement instructions. Material changes are reflected by the update date shown on this page.

To report a reproducible discrepancy, email hello@ogonlineruler.com with the device model, operating system, browser version, zoom, display scaling, calibration method, reference instrument, expected span, and observed span. We do not publish unverified accuracy claims or testimonials as evidence.
